De stad La Spezia ligt ubidacada in de regio Ligurië, in Noord-Italië, en is tegelijkertijd de hoofdstad van de provincie met dezelfde naam, gelegen in de Golf van La Spezia, ook bekend als Golfo dei Poeti (van de dichters) omdat het enige tijd de residentie was van belangrijke Engelse dichters zoals Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) en George Byron (1788-1824). Said is de commerciële haven, een van de belangrijkste in Italië, hoewel La Spezia ook een van de grootste militaire industrieën van het land herbergt: OTO Melara.
